As a pharmacy technician at UMD, you will be given the opportunity to work in a stimulating and challenging environment where you can utilize your talents and skills to provide a positive patient healthcare experience for all students, employees, and guests utilizing the UHC.
Under the supervision of a pharmacist, you will:
- Process prescriptions through all facets of workflow from drop off to pick up utilizing our pharmacy software in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR).
- Partner with pharmacists to manage inventory
- Report all pharmacy dispensing incidents and errors to supervisory staff immediately
- Comply with HIPAA and FERPA regulations regarding patient confidentiality at all times
- Maintain active licensure in accordance with Maryland Board of Pharmacy/COMAR throughout employment.
- Comply with the University of Maryland Code of Conduct at all times and in all capacities
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Completion of a high school level coursework with attainment of a high school diploma or possession of a State High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) is required. Education at the college level is preferred.

Experience:
A minimum of one year of equivalent experience requiring a familiarity with generic and trade names of pharmaceutical products.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- General knowledge of generally accepted pharmacy principles, practices and procedures, pharmaceutical generic and trade names, general mathematics, and personal computers is required.
- General knowledge of PC computer software applications, such as spreadsheets, databases, word processing, and data entry is required.
- Ability to operate various types of pharmacy equipment such as a laminar flow hood is required.
- Ability to use a CRT to access patient/drug information systems is required.
- Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time while performing pharmacy service support duties.
- Ability to lift; store and carry supplies and equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, to interact effectively with medical, nursing, and various allied health staff in order to successfully provide optimal patient care.

- Two or more years of pharmacy experience.
- Previous work experience in a high-volume retail environment.
- Proficiency with prescription sig codes and medical data entry roles.
- Familiarity with Cardinal Order Express and previous inventory specialist experience.
- Strong understanding of pharmaceutical calculations, including days supply, liquids, and insulin.
- Knowledge of the top 200 drugs, including prescription drug classes and medical conditions.
- Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills as well as professional communication skills with both verbal and written communication.
- Understanding of state and federal regulations governing the practice of pharmacy.
- Punctual, prompt, reliable, and highly attentive to detail-oriented medical or pharmaceutical work.
- Capacity to process insurance claims utilizing various BINs, PCNs, and RX processing groups.
- Superior customer service skills.
- Familiarity with point-of-sale register transactions and cash control procedures.

The position requires working in a standing posture for an extended period of time. Candidates must be able to lift up to 25 pounds as well as bend, step, reach, and utilize a computer workstation for extended periods during the normal course of pharmacy operations.
